Coming to the south I have realized that people have some very negative ideas of Detroit. So many people from Detroit move to Atlanta, you would think that would be the case. When I tell people that I am from Detroit they normally answer with a somber tone as if they feel bad for me. Don’t feel bad for me!
I’m glad that I grew up in Detroit! Detroit has made me a tough person and a quick thinker. There is good and bad in anything. I just wish that the world could see that there is so much more to Detroit.

Food
Being vegan we have a lot of options to eat in Detroit. Seva, Chive Kitchen, Ale Marys etc. I feel like in the North they are more accommodating of a vegan diet than they are in the south. Even if you aren’t vegan, there are so many good places to eat that you won’t find anywhere else.

Creativity
They have some of the best poetry slams, art, and creative events. There is a live show called “The Secret Society Of Twisted Storytellers” that I love. Here is a link so you can watch a story https://youtu.be/YfwHjVhVXO8 The show is generally at The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American history. People get on stage and tell stories based on things they have experienced and I love it. It seems like the community of creativity is so warm and inviting even though the stereotype is that people from the north are cold. Which brings me to my next point…

People Are Blunt
If you want to know the truth, ask a Detroiter. I find that in the south people are more concerned with manners than the truth. We are not afraid to hurt your feelings. The upside to this is you will always know where you stand with us and you don’t have to guess if people are sincere.

Detroit Rap
Some people don’t like Detroit rap. I am not some people. I think that Tee Grizzley is one of the best storytellers in rap period. Sada Baby is so charismatic and creative. Payroll is very talented also. I don’t think that Detroit rap gets enough recognition. Eminem, Big Sean, and Dej Loaf have had mainstream success to name a few, but there are so many more talented artists.
The moral of the story is that Detroit is not all bad. I wish that people could experience the goodness of Detroit because it’s something special about it that you won’t find anywhere else
It pisses me off when folks who have never stepped into Detroit think they know Detroit because of what they’ve heard. I always get, “you ain’t from here, where you from?” When I say Detroit, they say, “I can tell.” Me being me, I pull them in and devour them. How can you tell, you’ve never been there for as much as a visit. They know I am not from Atlanta because according to them, I have an accent. They know I’m not from Atlanta because I say things like,”pop.” My differences don’t define Detroit and the hype they believe. My city is unlike any other, yes we have our issues but doesn’t every city? I found a T-shirt that I want made, its gonna stop all those Detroit speculations, lol. There TRULY is NO place like home! 313 for life!!!

Girl they think I have an accent too. It really is a shame how people believe everything they see on tv. There is no place like it in the whole world. If it wasn’t winter, I would go for a visit. I’ll wait until they are having better weather lol

Detroit is a cool town on the way back up. It’s diverse and full of history. I enjoyed a visit there in April.
