Dating and Distancing

We are all tired of hearing about the sad things going on in the world right now. We know we need to be informed, but we also need breaks from it for the sake of our mental health. For those of us who are trying to keep our lives as close to normal as possible, we have to focus on happy things. Current happenings in the world are putting everything on hold, but that doesn’t mean that life stops!

Everything around us seems to be changing from our careers, our schooling, our daycare… and there seems not to be an end in sight.

Most importantly what does all of this mean for our peace of mind? What does this mean for companionship?

I wrote a blog about getting along with the people in your home during this time of social distancing called Quarantine Quarreling, but what about people who have no one at all? What about the lonely hearts? What does this mean for dating? If we can’t go within 6 feet of one anyone, and if we can’t go to any social events to meet up because we are on lockdown, how are we supposed to date? If you already have a love this may be easier. You can plan a virtual video date, play games online, send emails, or do whatever works for you.

What if you don’t though?

Online dating is still an option. I normally think that online dating is a good option, but right now I think that its a better option now than it normally is! Think about it… if you meet someone you will have to actually talk to them for a while before you meet up with them. Hopefully, enough excitement has grown that when this is all over and you meet them it’s something special.

We live in a world where we can pretty much have anything instantly, but when it comes to love, instantaneous does not always equal long lasting. Love alone is not enough. You have to make sure that you have the same values and vision as your partner so that you can grow together. What better way to so that than speaking to someone and getting to know their personality first?

Think that sounds crazy? Well, people do it all the time. People keep long-distance relationships alive every day and this is essentially what this would be. Before online dating was even popular or seen as socially acceptable people all over the world have been connecting on Myspace, Facebook, Black Planet, and every other social site.

See who can carry on a conversation. See if you enjoy video chatting with them. You would be surprised how deep of a connection can be built before you meet someone face to face.

Some things you won’t be able to know though. You won’t know if they have bad hygiene, you won’t know if they walk in an unattractive way, you won’t know how they eat, BUT as you get to talk some of these things will come out. See how the person feels about cleanliness and hygiene. If you can’t meet someone face to face it’s really important to have those hard conversations.

The moral of the story is that 2020 doesn’t have to be a loveless year for you. 2020 could be the year that you find your greatest love. It’s not for everyone, but it could be for you! Don’t knock it until you try it.
